How to draw the female head in profile

Today we are going through the female head in profile.

You can check out how to draw a male head in profile here: http://panoskamoulakos.blogspot.gr/2013/04/how-to-draw-head-in-pfofile.html

Let’s start.

Step 1
Draw the circular type shape you see below. Again notice how the jaw and the jaw bone are affecting the lower part of the face.

Step 2
Right in the middle of the head draw a horizontal axis. This where the eye rests.

Step 3
There isn’t a particular scaling method for placing the eye somewhere specific (contrary to drawing ‘en face’). Draw a triangular shape close to the vertical axis. Make the eyelash heavy.

Step 4
Draw the eye brow. Notice how the eyebrow on the right side goes inside the head forming a depth illusion. Draw it thin and curvy.

Step 5
Draw the axis from the beginning of the eye. This is where the nostril is. Cut the lower part of the face (from horizontal axis to jaw) in the middle. This where the nose exists.

Step 6
Draw the nose. Notice the curve starting from the eyebrow that goes in, then out and then back in again to complete the nose shape.

Step 7
Draw a vertical axis from the middle of the eye. This where the mouth is.

Step 8
Draw the mouth. Notice how the curves shape the lips and the jaw.

Step 9
Draw the neck. The neck has a slanted angle; it is not vertical to the head.

Step 10
Now draw two horizontal axis around the end of the nose and the eyebrow.
Between the axis draw the ear.

Step 11
Draw the hair. Treat hair as a whole unified shape.

It is Easter here in Athens so I will be taking a two weeks break. Therefore new post will be 19 May 2013.

How to draw the female face

Today we are drawing the female face.

Check out previous ‘‘how to draw face’’ post: http://panoskamoulakos.blogspot.gr/2013/04/how-to-draw-face.html

Eleven step process plus one this time! Let’s start!

Step 1
Draw egg type shape. You can see the difference between the male head shape and the female one. Here is a lot curvier.

Step 2
Draw the vertical and the horizontal axis. Notice the curve on the horizontal one.

Step 3
Find where the eyes will be. Notice the distance between the eyes is one eye distance.

Step 4
Draw the eyes. Draw heavy eyelashes. Treat them as one unified shape.

Step 5
Draw the eyebrows. Make them thin and curvy.

Step 6
From beginning of eyes draw two vertical lines. Cut the main vertical line between eyes and chin in the middle. This is where the nose goes.

Step 7
Draw the nose.

Step 8
Draw two vertical lines from the middle of the eyes. This where the mouth will go.

Step 9
Draw the mouth. Draw the outline of the lips.

Step 10
Between the eyebrows and nose are the ears. Draw two horizontal lines to find their location.

Step 11
Draw the hair. Treat hair as a shape.

Step 12
Finally I redrew the jaw line a little higher so that I can make the chin a little smaller and more feminine. Always be prepared to make adjustments as you move towards the final image. Don’t let the rough sketch beneath dictate how your drawing should look like.

Next week drawing the female head profile!

How to draw a head in profile

Today’s post is about drawing a head in profile. Similar to last week’s post this will be an eleven step process.

Check out how to draw a face step by step process: http://panoskamoulakos.blogspot.gr/2013/04/how-to-draw-face.html

Step 4
Draw the eye brow and the skin over the eye. Notice how the eyebrow on the right side goes inside the head forming a depth illusion. It also touches the vertical axis.

Step 5
Draw a vertical axis from the beginning of the eye.

Now draw two horizontal axis around the end of the nose and the eyebrow.

Step 10
Between the axis draw the ear.

Step 11
Draw the hairline. See how the line curves around the head.

How to draw a face

Starting today and the following weeks to come I will be conducting a series of “How to draw” tutorials. On these tutorials I will cover how to draw the human head and characteristics (eyes, noses etc.), the human body (male, female) and perspective (one point, two point and three point perspective).
These tutorials would be extremely useful for beginner artists, so if you are interested in learning how to draw here is a good place to start.

In today’s post we are going through the process of creating a male’s face.

This will be an eleven step process.

Step 1
Draw the “egg” type of shape. Notice the difference at the bottom of the face and how angular it is.

Step 2
Draw the vertical and the horizontal axis. The axis are drawn in the middle of the face. Notice the slight curve on the horizontal one.

Step 3
Draw five equal parts on the horizontal axis. This is the size of an eye. The face is divided in five eyes distance.

Step 4
Draw the eyes. The eyes have a “fish” type of shape.

Step 5
Draw the eyebrows and two subtle lines over the eyes indicating the skin covering the eyeballs. The eyebrows are “hugging” the eye in a way protecting it.

Step 6
Draw two vertical lines from where the eyes begin.

Step 7
The nose is half the distance from the chin. The lines we drew at step 6 indicate where the nostrils are.

Step 8
Draw two vertical lines from the pupils.

Step 9
Between those axis draw the mouth. The mouth has a shape similar to the letter “M” but stretched from each corner.

Step 10
Draw the ears. The ears are between the horizontal axis of nose and eyes/eyebrows.

Step 11
Finally add the hairline. Put it one nose distance from the eyes axis. Add in a few subtle lines for rendering.

A word of advice, don’t despair if you don’t make it look exactly the same. Keep practicing this exercise, it will come out better and better each time you try it!

Next week we will learn how to do a face in profile.

Leave any comments or suggestions you may have down below the comments section.

Finally “Medusa” updates soon to come! Find out about the project here: http://panoskamoulakos.blogspot.gr/2013/02/medusa-graphic-novel.html
